Dedication

This site is dedicated to the memory of our gallant Newfoundland mix, Kodiak, who died on January 14, 2007 from complications of Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS) just five weeks after diagnosis. He was only six years old, and our READ and therapy dog. He enjoyed both his therapy visits to nursing homes and his READ visits with children. He was his Grandma’s precious baby boy even though he weighed 120 lbs. He was his Grandpa’s ball game partner and his Grandpa called him Willlie Mayes Jr. because he seldom missed a catch. He is greatly missed each and every day. He was supposed to live a normal life span, but it didn’t happen that way. Too much is unknown.

SARDS is a disease that appears to have many possible ramifications. Not all dogs react the same way. Kody’s SARDS Research Association, Inc. has been formed to try and raise the monies necessary to fund research into the cause and cure for SARDS and whatever complications seem to go with it. It is hoped that in this way other families will not have the pain of losing a much loved companion or even seeing that companion lose his or her sight.

Postscript-

In August, based on new evidence it was determined that Kody died, not of Classic SARDS, but of an extremely similar disease only identified in March named “Immune Mediated Retinopathy”. It requires special equipment to determine and was unknown until then which was too late for Kody. If your dog is diagnosed with SARDS please have your vet get in touch with Dr. Sinisa Grozdanic at Iowa State Veterinary College to review the possibilities.

We will continue the fight against SARDS and all related diseases.
